Bert Campaneris Stats

Bert Campaneris was born on Monday, March 9, 1942, in Pueblo Nuevo, Cuba. Campaneris was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 23, 1964, with the Kansas City Athletics. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Bert Campaneris baseball stats page.

"When Campaneris arrived in 1964, he looked like the future. He wasn't actually the only good player on the team; we had ( Rocky ) Colavito and ( Jim ) Gentile and Ed Charles and Wayne Causey and John Wyatt . Dick Green , who would be a spear carrier for the Oakland dynasty, actually arrived before Campaneris. Even bad teams have four or five players who are as good as some of the players on the good teams. Campy was the one guy who mattered , the cornerstone. There was one game in 1966 that symbolized what he meant to the organization. Nobody else in the lineup got a hit; nobody else, as I recall, even reached base, but Campy went 4-for-4, stole several bases, and scored 4 runs. The A's won the game, I think 4-2 or 4-3. There was a feeling of 'hang-on' Campy, we'll get you some help." - Bill James in The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract (Free Press Publishing, 06/13/2003, Page 610)

Did you know that Bert Campaneris is one of only five players in Major League history to play all nine positions during a single game ( 09-08-1965 )? The other four are Cesar Tovar ( 09-22-1968 ), Scott Sheldon ( 09-06-2000 ), Shane Halter ( 10-01-2000 ) and Andrew Romine ( 09-30-2017 ).

Bert Campaneris, Nine Positions Played in a Game
Bert Campaneris | The Wilmington News-Journal | September 9, 1965 | Page 14
Bert Campaneris holds the all-time Athletics franchise record for career games played (1,795), hits (1,882), plate appearances (7,895), and at bats (7,180). [ MLB.com Sortable Stats ]

Campy was there during the franchise transition from Kansas City to Oakland and is the last player to wear #45 in Kansas City Athletics history and the first player to wear #45 in Oakland Athletics history.

Campy hit three triples in a game on August 29, 1967 , tying the American League record for triples in a game . He was the first - and to date the only - Athletics player to ever hit three triples in game !

Campy was the American League stolen base champion six times (1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1972), and the first Oakland Athletics player to earn the title (1968).

Campy stole five bases in a game on May 24, 1976 , one shy of the American League record for stolen bases in a game . Eddie Collins twice stole six bases as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics, but Campy was the first to steal five bases in a game wearing an Oakland Athletics uniform.

On July 23, 1964 , Bert Campaneris made his Major League debut and hit a home run during his first at-bat off the first pitch ever thrown to him. Jim Kaat surrendered the home run and six innings later, Kaat served-up another homer to Campy making him one of only five players in big league history to hit two home runs in their first game - the other four are Bob Nieman ( September 14, 1951 ), Mark Quinn ( September 14, 1999 ), J.P. Arencibia ( August 7, 2010 ), and Yasmani Grandal ( June 2, 2012 ).
