In 1976, Bill Campbell tied the American League (AL) record for Most Wins in a Season by a Relief Pitcher . Campbell won a record setting seventeen games with the Minnesota Twins that season (zero starts), trying the seventeen wins (zero starts) recorded by John Hiller in 1974.

The two current record holders broke the mark of sixteen wins by an American League relief pitcher originally set by Dick Radatz in 1964. One year earlier, Radatz had fifteen wins in relief, tying the mark he broke (and tied) held by Luis Arroyo set in 1961.

The National League (NL) relief pitcher with the record for most wins is Roy Face , who won eighteen games with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1959.

The Rolaids Relief Man Award was an annual Major League Baseball award given from 1976 to 2012, to the top relief pitchers of the regular season, one in the American League (AL) and one in the National League (NL). The inaugural award winners were Bill Campbell (AL) and Rawly Eastwick (NL).

Campbell also won the Rolaids Relief Man Award the following season (1977), making him the first two-time recipient, the first to win in consecutive seasons (1976-1977), and the first to win with more than one team ( Minnesota Twins / Boston Red Sox ).
