Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I never go up to the plate without a plan. The plan, however, depends on what you've seen from the pitcher, what his tendencies are, how you're feeling that day, what the game situation is, and what he's most likely to throw at that point in time." - Will Clark

Did you know that Will "The Thrill" Clark hit a home run in his first at bat ? On April 8, 1986 , the former Golden Spikes Award winner (the top amateur player in the country), stepped to the plate, a veteran pitcher named Nolan Ryan was on the mound, and with his first swing (on an 0-1 count), Clark nearly hit one out of the Astrodome.

In 1989 , Will Clark had the second highest batting average (1st: Tony Gwynn / Top 25 ) in the National League, tops amongst first baseman - earning The Thrill his first Silver Slugger Award , the first San Francisco Giants player to receive the honor at first base.

In 1991 , Will Clark led the NL in slugging percentage and total base . His batting average slipped from .333 (in 1989 ) to .301, but it was still tops amongst first baseman, earning him his second Silver Slugger Award . Since Clark, no Giant has ever received the honor at first!

That same year, Will Clark had yet another strong defensive performance at first base, leading all NL first basemen in fielding percentage and double plays, earning him a Gold Glove Award at First , the first San Francisco Giants player to receive the honor at first base.

Cecil Cooper (1980), Keith Hernandez (1980, 1984), Eddie Murray (1983, 1984) and Don Mattingly (1985, 1986, 1987) - first baseman, before Will Clark, who captured both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove during the same season. No Giant before Clark had ever won both baseball awards during the same season at any position.
