Jimmy Collins Stats

Jimmy Collins was born on Sunday, January 16, 1870, in Buffalo, New York. Collins was 25 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 19, 1895, with the Boston Beaneaters. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Jimmy Collins baseball stats page.

"'That's all right,' replied Collins. 'Bunt the ball to me. I'll show you something.' He did precisely that for 16 years, played 18 in all, 14 in the majors. No one has come in on the grass to field bunts with the meat hand quite like Collins. He had to be good, for he faced such expert tappers as Wee Willie Keeler , Jesse Burkett , John McGraw , ( Hughie ) Jennings , Jack Doyle and Billy Hamilton . It was almost impossible to hit the ball past him." - Sportswriter Grays Grayson in the Evening Citizen (06/02/1943, 'Collins Third Base Stylist; Couldn't Hit the Ball Past Him from The Ottawa Citizen', Page 1)

In 1883 Francis Richter founded the Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887 Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914 Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914).
