Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The term a 'disgruntled player' describes Lave Cross. He played for nine teams over a 21-year career. In 1893, he received a $1,800 pay cut (55 percent). Lave Cross would go along with his best friend Ed Delahanty . He often borrowed money from Delahanty , who hoped Cross wouldn't remember he needed to pay it bac. Cross objected to the temperance clause in his contract even though he did not drink, saying the 'contract implied he drank.' So he refused to sign it. In 1884, Delahanty , Delahanty's brother and Cross played on a barnstorming team in Ohio to make extra money. Cross was let go and promptly sued the team for $300; the lawsuit lasted a year, but he won. Cross' attitude made him popular with the cranks wherever he played. - Author Eddie Mitchell in Baseball Rowdies of the 19th Century: Brawlers, Drinkers, Pranksters and Cheats in the Early Days of the Major Leagues (McFarland Publishing, 07/05/2018, Lave Cross , Page 70)
