Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Blake (DeWitt) has been great. He has a personality and a calmness about him that doesn't fit. You say to him, 'You start the season at third base and we don't even want to know you're there. Just don't hurt us.' But he has done a lot to help us win games." - Manager Joe Torre on MLB.com (Mike Scarr, 05/17/2008, Dodgers solve Santana, Angels , Source )

Did you know that the second home run Blake DeWitt hit occurred on May 6, 2008 , and was an inside the park go-ahead homer in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Nelson Figueroa ? That shot, and some spectacular stats, helped him win Rookie of the Month :

In 26 games in May, the 22-year-old DeWitt batted .322 with five home runs and 18 RBI. The left-handed hitter went 28-for-87, scored 14 runs, hit two doubles, drew eight walks and posted a slugging percentage of .517 and an on-base percentage of .379.

His month was highlighted by a 3-for-4 effort against the New York Mets on May 6th which included a go-ahead inside-the-park home run in the Dodgers ' 5-4 victory. It was the first inside-the-parker by a Dodger since Dave Roberts did it in 2003.

DeWitt had at least one RBI in each of his last five games in May. Entering Wednesday, his .290 batting average was second highest among all National League rookies and he was tied with Cleveland's Casey Blake among all Major Leaguers for the most hits with the bases loaded with six. The Missouri native was selected in the first round (28th overall) in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft .
