Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"After struggling for six years with the New York Giants, Northfield native Ed Doheny appeared to be on the brink of major league stardom with the Pittsburgh Pirates as the 1903 season was coming to a close. The lefthander had just won his sixteenth game, matching his previous season's total, and the Pirates were preparing for the first-ever World Series. But Doheny started behaving bizarrely and was escorted home to Andover, Massachusetts, on September 22. The he received daily treatment, the Vermonter's condition failed to improve. On October 11, he attacked the nurse with a cast-iron stove-leg, then held a score of neighbors at bay before the police finally overpowered him. Doheny was declared insane and spent the last 13 years of his life in Massachusetts asylums." - Vermont Historical Society Baseball Card (#6)
