"(Al) Downing learned how to pitch the hard way, bouncing from team to team after his fast ball evaporated. 'I realize now I'll never throw that hard again,' Downing said last season. 'I'm fortunate I learned how to make it as a pitcher.'" - The Complete Handbook of Baseball (1972 Edition)

Did you know that on August 11, 1967 , Al Downing, during the second inning, struck out Tony Horton (with exactly three pitches), Don Demeter (with exactly three pitches), and Duke Sims (with exactly three pitches), recording the first known immaculate inning ( 9 Pitches - 9 Strikes - 3 Outs ) by a New York Yankee ?

Did you know that Al Downing struck out seven consecutive batters on July 14, 1973 , one shy of the Dodgers franchise record held by Johnny Podres (set on July 2, 1962 )?

Did you know that Al Downing surrendered one-hundred seventy-seven home runs in his career to one-hundred twenty-one different batters, including three to Hank Aaron ? Those three occurred on April 15, 1973 , June 29, 1973 , and the (arguably) most famous home run ever hit in baseball history, on April 8, 1974 - moving Hank Aaron from 714 career home runs, a tie with Babe Ruth , to 715, the all-time home run hitter in Major League history at that time.

Hank Aaron / Al Downing | Home Run Number 715 | April 8, 1974 | MLB Properties, LLC
The Yankees traded Al Downing to the Athletics prior to the 1970 season along with catcher Frank Fernandez , for Danny Cater and Ossie Chavarria . Downing struggled a bit in Oakland (3-3, 3.95 ERA), was traded early in the season to the Milwaukee Brewers , then struggled even more (2-10, 3.34 ERA). The Dodgers , however, traded for him anyway and were rewarded when Downing won 20-games for them the following year, making him just the third lefty at that time since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles to win at least twenty games in a season (joining Sandy Koufax and Claude Osteen ). Al, deservingly so, easily won the Comeback Player of the Year Award , the second Dodger to receive the honor (after 1966 recipient Phil Regan ).

In 1961, Whitey Ford set the New York Yankee team record for strikeouts in a season by a left-handed pitcher when he ended the season with two-hundred nine strikeouts. In 1964, Downing broke the Hall of Famers record, striking out 217 batters, and Al held that mark until Ron Guidry smashed his mark in 1978, striking out 248 hitters (the team record through today).
