Jimmy Dykes Stats

Jimmy Dykes was born on Tuesday, November 10, 1896, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dykes was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 6, 1918, with the Philadelphia Athletics. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Jimmy Dykes baseball stats page.

"When the A's got within one run (during the 1939 World Series ), Dykes was so happy that he reached over and, while screaming, 'We're back in the game,' slammed the back the fellow sitting next to him so hard that the man fell of the bench. That man was the Athletics' elderly manager, Connie Mack . Dykes apologized profusely. 'It's all right Jimmy,' Mack said. 'And isn't this a wonderfuly rally?' A few minutes later Dykes pounded a two-run double off the wall to put the finishing touches on one of the greaties rallies in baseball history. The episode was classic Dykes. There was seldom anything ordinary about Jimmy's storied forty-seven-year baseball career during which he became the first man both to play and manager in the big leagues twenty or more years." - Author Rich Westcott in Philadelphia's Top Fifty Baseball Players (University of Nebraska Press, 05/01/2013, 'Jimmy Dykes', Page 93)

Did you know that when Jimmy Dykes retired, he ranked eighth in American League history in games played (2,282), and ninth in at bats (8,046)? Too easy? Did you know after that he later became the first manager in history to win 1,000 games without capturing a league pennant?
Jimmy Dykes
Jimmy Dykes | 1960 Topps (#214) | Baseball Almanac Collection

Did you know that Jimmy Dykes won two World Series rings ( 1929 & 1930 ) and appeared in the all three of the Philadelphia Athletics final Fall Classics ? The franchise, 1901 through 1954, played in eight World Series and when they won in 1929 / 1930 , they became the first American League franchise to win consecutive titles more than once (they were already the first franchise to ever win back-to-back titles in the junior circuit).

Did you know that Jimmy Dykes hit 365 doubles with the Athletics , the most in franchise history? Amongst A's , he has played the third most games in an Athletics uniform, had the third most at-bats, scored the seventh most runs, had the fourth most hits, and driven in the ninth most runs.

Jimmy Dykes was selected to play third base in the 1933 All-Star Game - the first in Midsummer Classic history - making him the first third baseman ever selected in American League history to start at the hot corner. The contest was played in Comiskey Park, Dykes batted sixth, went 2-for-3 in the game, and turned the first double-play in All-Star Game history with first baseman Lou Gehrig in the second inning.

Jimmy Dykes - 1st Baltimore Orioles Manager
Jimmy Dykes | First Baltimore Orioles Manager | Photoshop by Baseball Almanac, Inc.
One of the last player-managers in history, Dykes served in that position with the Chicago White Sox from 1934 through 1939, continued there through 1946, later became the first manager ever of the Baltimore Orioles (who had just relocated from St. Louis), managed six teams in total (the most by any 20th-century skipper) and was so popular (amongst the players) that Bobby Shantz , his ace, stated, "He was the best manager I ever played for. He got more out of his players than any manager I had, including Casey Stengel ."
