Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The Giants were seven outs away from winning their first World Series since moving to San Francisco in 1958. Russ Ortiz was pitching a gem against the Angels. Then, with one out in the seventh, Troy Glaus singled. Brad Fullmer singled. Dusty Baker went to the bullpen for Felix Rodriguez . In an epic at-bat, Scott Spiezio fouls off several pitches before launching a three-run homer. The next inning, Darin Erstad homers off Tim Worrell . The lead was down to one run. Tim Salmon singles. Garret Anderson singles. Robb Nen in the game. Troy Glaus doubles. Angels 6, Giants 5. Never before had a team blown such a big lead in potential World Series-clinching game. Game 7 goes to the Angels." - ESPN Staff Writer Jeff Merron (ESPN Page 2, '#4. Most painful losses in baseball history', Source )

On June 25, 2000 , Darin Erstad hit a leadoff home run versus Mark Redman . In that same game, in the bottom of the 11th inning, Eddie Guardado on the mound, Erstad hit a walkoff home run. Neither leadoff or walkoff home runs are truly rare, but hitting one of each in the same game had happened only two times in baseball history prior to this game [ Billy Hamilton in 1893, Vic Power in 1957].

Did you know that Darin Erstad is the only player in baseball history to win a Gold Glove in the outfield and the infield? In 2000 and 2002, Erstad earned Golden Gloves in the Outfield , leading all American League (A.L.) outfielders in Total Zone Runs. Two years later, Erstad was the moved by the Angels to first base where he fielded .996, third best in the A.L., winning a Gold Glove at First - becoming the first player to add both an infield and outfield gold glove award to his trophy case.

Darin Erstad had exactly 100 RBI in 2000 , not enough to break into the Top 25 , but he was the first player in Major League history to drive in at least 100 RBIs as a leadoff hitter. That amazing season included 240 hits (#1 in the AL), 170 singles (#1 in the AL), 676 at-bats (#1 in the AL), a .355 batting average (#2 in the AL), 366 total bases (#2 in the AL) and 121 runs scored (#3 in the AL). A Silver Slugger Award came with those stats and his 240 hits remain a team record for hits in a season by an Angel , well ahead of second place ( Vladimir Guerrero , 206 hits, in 2004).
