Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I was sent up there to hit and that's exactly what I did," said pinch batter Ed Fitz Gerald after ruining Billy Pierce's bid for a perfect game last night [ Box Score ]. Pierce , Chicago White Sox star left-hander, had hurled 8 and 2-3 innings of perfect ball when Fitz Gerald came up to bat for pitcher Russ Kemmerer . The right-handed swinging catcher caught a Pierce curve ball on the end of his bat and sent a clean shot down the right field line to spoil Pierce's bid for immortality. "Sure, I'm glad I got it," said Fitz Gerald. "How else do you expect me to feel." Fitz Gerald went to the plate with a .313 average having made 10 hits in 32 at bats. It was his first extra-base hit this season." - The St. Louis Globe-Democrat (06/29/1958, ED FITZ GERALD GLAD HE RUINED PIERCE'S JEWEL , Page 2E)
