Wayne Garrett was born on Wednesday, December 3, 1947, in Brooksville, Florida. Garrett was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 12, 1969, with the New York Mets. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Wayne Garrett baseball stats page.
"Garrett reported to spring training with the Mets and made the club. By then, ( Bud ) Harrelson had returned, sending Garrett to the bench. At the time, the Mets' third baseman was 36-year-old Ed Charles . But two weeks into the season, Charles already started wearing down. '( Gil ) Hodges came up to me and asked if I had ever played third base,' Garrett said. 'I said yeah and he said, ''Well, you're playing third base. You're in the game right now.'' We platooned after that. I played against all the righties and Ed against lefties. I went from a guy who questioned his career to a starter for a major league team. Being in the right place at the right time and having the right people see you and having them like you. That's the way life is.'" - Herald-Tribune Staff Writer Doug Fernandes (08/20/2009, 'Reliving a miracle', Source )

Did you know that Wayne Garrett served during the Vietnam War? He is one of 54 former Major League baseball players who are also veterans of the Vietnam War. A complete list of those who served their country in the armed forces during the Vietnam War appears below:
1969 NLCS Official Program | New York Mets Edition | Baseball Almanac Collection
In 1969, the first National
League Championship Series
in baseball history was played and the
New York Mets
swept the
Atlanta Braves
in three games. The starting third baseman in
Game 1
,
Game 2
, and
Game 3
was Wayne Garrett.
In 1965, Wayne Garrett was selected by the Milwaukee Braves in the 6th round of the 1965 draft held June 8th. In 1961, Wayne's older brother , Adrian Garrett , was signed as an amateur free agent by the Milwaukee Braves . The Garrett brothers both made it to the big leagues, but neither ever played for the Milwaukee Braves (when Adrian made his debut, April 13, 1966 , the franchise had already relocated to Atlanta ).
In 1973, Wayne Garrett hit three lead-off home runs. The first was August 15, 1973 , off Steve Arlin . The second was September 4, 1973 , off Jim Longborg . The third was September 7, 1973 , off Steve Renko . The latter was only the 12th instance in Major League history where a lead-off hitter connected for a home run and that team then went on to win the game 1-0. It was the first instance for the Mets and the feat went unmatched until Kaz Matsui did it versus Randy Johnson on May 12, 2004 .
The New York Mets appeared in both the 1969 World Series and 1973 World Series . Wayne Garrett is one of eight Mets who played in both Fall Classics . The other seven were Ken Boswell , Jerry Grote , Bud Harrelson , Cleon Jones , Jerry Koosman , Ed Kranepool and Tom Seaver .
