Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"FRED GLADDING. Fred 'the Bear' Gladding was the first man from Flat Rock to play in Major League Baseball. Born in 1936, he graduated from Flat Rock High School in 1955. Baseball was his game and the 6-foot 1-inch, 190-pound teenage pitcher was signed by the Detroit Tigers with Coach Mittlestat out of high school. In 1960, he married Margie Clotfelter. By 1961, he was called up to the majors." - Author Stacey L. Reynolds in Flat Rock (Images of America Series) (Arcadia Publishing, March 14, 2011, Page 102)

Did you know that when Fred Gladding saved a National League leading twenty-nine games in 1969 (the first season the save statistic was officially recognized), he became the first Houston Astros right-handed pitcher to lead the league in games saved ? Hal Woodeshick , who had twenty-three saves in 1964 , was the Astros ' first lefty to be a saves champion .

Four players, all pitchers, have had more than forty-five career at-bats in the big leagues, yet finished with exactly one-hit. Fred Gladding is the only player with more than fifty-at bats who had one hit, the other three, oddly enough, all had exactly forty-seven at-bats and one hit ( Aaron Heilman , Rick van den Hurk & Will Sawyer ). Gladding's one career hit was given it's own section (oddly enough again) in Great Hitting Pitchers (SABR Publishing, April 23, 2012, Page 80):

Pitcher-Batter Briefs

Fred Gladding pitched short relief in the majors for 13 years. He went to bat only 62 times in that period and collected only one safe hit. What were the circumstances of this earth-shaking achievement and who was the pitcher who so far has escaped the notoriety of giving up this isolated bingle?

The date was July 30, 1969 and the scene was Shea Stadium in New York. Gladding was pitching the last 2 2/3 innings for Houston, which was walloping the Mets in the first game of a twin bill. His single off Ron Taylor came in the middle of an 11-run outburst in the ninth inning. Dennis Menke had already hit a grand slam homer off Cal Koonce , and after Taylor came in, the Astros gave him the same treatment. Gladding's single scored a run and then Fred rode home on Jimmy Wynn's grand slam, the second home run in the inning. For Taylor , who gained fame for pitching seven hitless innings in four World Series games, this was not one of his good days.
