"He (Yan Gomes) brought leadership and a work ethic that the other players really picked up. I think the biggest reason for our success was the leadership he brought to the field each day." - Barry University Coach Marc Pavao in The Knoxville News Sentinel (Staff Writer, Former UT players Gomes, Lima get noticed at Barry , 06/20/2009)

Did you know that when Yan Gomes made his Major League debut on May 17, 2012 , he became the first Brazilian -born player in Major League history? Gomes went 2-for-3 that historic day and recorded his first big league hit, a single off of New York Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes . Too easy? Did you know that Gomes is married to Jenna Hammaker, the daughter of All-Star ( 1983 ) twirler Atlee Hammaker ? [ Major League Baseball Players by Birthplace ]

Since Gomes, four additional players from Brazil have made it to the show, Andre Rienzo [the first Brazilian -born pitcher], Paulo Orlando , Luiz Gohara , and Thyago Vieira .

In 2014, Yan Gomes hit .278, leading all American League catchers in batting average enabling him to put a Silver Slugger Award on his mantle. He was the second Cleveland Indians catcher to earn the award, joining ( Venezuelan -born) backstop Victor Martinez - who won in 2004, catching, and in 2014, as a designated hitter!
