Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Every team thinks their America's team, you hear it from the New York Yankees , the L.A. Dodgers , Atlanta Braves . They're the ones who speak the loudest of it, 'we're America's team.' We're the only team of any of those people that actually know the truly meaning of that. We played for a whole country and that's very, very special. That's like no other team that's out there. Montreal , they were doing it for a while but it was a very special time. To be able to do that is truly a blessing and I was very fortunate to have played for the Blue Jays , just in that sense of the meaning of playing the game of baseball." - Kelly Gruber in Prince Albert Now (Jeff D'Andrea. A Q&A with Blue Jay legend Kelly Gruber . 09/24/2014)

Kelly Wayne Gruber was a Major League Baseball player with the Toronto Blue Jays (1984-1992) and California Angels ( 1993 ). Did you know that when Kelly Gruber won a Gold Glove Award at third base in 1990, he was the first Toronto Blue Jays recipient of a Gold Glove at the hot corner? Do you know why his teammates bought him the tricycle pictured below? Details are beneath the photo of him riding it in Exhibition Park.

KELLY GRUBER CYCLE

On April 16, 1989 , Kelly Gruber hit a bases-empty home run in the bottom of the first inning off Floyd Bannister . An inning later, Gruber doubled to left field, driving in two runs ( Manuel Lee & Tom Lawless ). In the fourth inning, Gruber grounded out. In the fifth inning, Gruber lined out to center. A cycle was probably not on his mind. But then, in the seventh inning, Gruber hit the often-elusive triple, leaving him a single shy of history:

Lefty Jerry Gleaton was brought in by the Kansas City Royals in the eighth inning, down 15-7, Tom Gordon had given up three runs in inning earlier in his inning of work. Gruber wasn't phased and hit a sharp single which easily dropped well in-front of center fielder Jim Eisenreich , leaving him on first base with a single, completing the cycle , and making him the first Toronto Blue Jays cycle hitter .

cycle was" in an interview with SportsNet (Kristina Rutherford, June 26, 2014), then continued, "And thank goodness I didn't because I'd a probably choked it. But I found out I hit for the cycle after my last hit, when I was on first. Everybody's standing up and is giving me a standing ovation. I'm like, ok, it's the worst hit of the afternoon. What are these people thinking! I'm not gonna be able to hang here, man, these people are whacked. Before that, I'm on deck, I'm gettin' loose, and I hear, 'Ok Kelly boy, all we need is a single!' And I'm thinkin' to myself, Really? Did I just hear that? Is he serious? I might ask for a trade! If I can't please them with a home run, double and a triple, I'm not gonna please them! But seriously, it was good that I didn't know. I wasn't concentrating on, all I need is a single."

There were 968 Major League games played in Exhibition Stadium, the Toronto Blue Jays won 492, lost 476, and every American League team visited at some point during the stadium's existence (1977 through 1989), but only Kelly Gruber ever completed a cycle in the ballpark.
