Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and he weighs 162 pounds; he looks like an alter boy with a mustache. It is almost impossible to accept that his scrawny body is capable of generating a 92-mile-per-hour fastball, but that is how Guidry's heat comes at a hitter. The bigger pitchers on the Yankees, like Dick Tidrow and Ken Clay , marvel at Guidry's speed. Guidry cannot remember not being fast, and he doesn't attempt to analyze how he does it; just calls it 'a gift' and every so often thanks God for it." - Sports Writer Tony Kornheiser in The Index-Journal (06/20/1978, 'Confidence formula for Guidry's success', Page7)

On June 17, 1978 , Ron Guidry mowed down eighteen California Angels ' hitters, a still-standing New York Yankees team record for strikeouts in a game, once held by Bob Shawkey (15 strikeouts on September 27, 1919 ) & Whitey Ford (15 strikeouts on April 22, 1959 ). Did you know Ron Guidry went 25-3 in 1978, finishing with a .893 winning percentage - one of the ten best single season winning percentages in Major League history?

Did you know Ron Guidry, during the three games he lost in 1978 (see the fact up above), lost each one of them to a left-handed pitcher whose first name was Mike? They were Mike Caldwell ( July 7, 1978 ), Mike Flanagan ( August 4, 1978 ), and Mike Willis ( September 20, 1978 ).

Did you know Ron Guidry was one of the few New York Yankee Team Captains ? From 1986 through 1989 Guidry, along with Willie Randolph shared the responsibility.

Did you know Ron Guidry won five Gold Gloves , all consecutively (1982 through 1986), and no other Yankee pitcher has ever won more ( Bobby Shantz is second all-time, with four, 1957-1960)?

Ron Guidry threw exactly three pitches to Carlton Fisk , all strikes, in the ninth inning of a game played on August 7, 1984 . The next batter, Tom Paciorek , saw exactly three pitches, all strikes as well. The final batter of the inning, Greg Luzinski , saw exactly three pitches also, and all three were also strikes. The first (discovered) immaculate inning to occur in the American League during the ninth inning.

Ron Guidry #49 | New York Yankees Retired Numbers Plaque
The New York Yankees retired #49 - the only number Ron Guidry wore during his entire Major League / Bronx Bombers career - on August 23, 2003. Prior to that date, the Yankees had retired sixteen numbers, but only one other pitcher, Whitey Ford , who had his #16 retired on August 3, 1974.
