Josh Hamilton was born on Thursday, May 21, 1981, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hamilton was 25 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 2, 2007, with the Cincinnati Reds. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Josh Hamilton baseball stats page.
"Josh Hamilton was a once-in-a-generation talent with a golden left arm (as a schoolboy pitcher he consistently hit 96 mph) and a vicious home run swing (his bat speed was once clocked at a ridiculous 110 mph). He was a true five-tool wonder, but what ultimately compelled Tampa Bay to choose Hamilton over another high school phenom, righthander Josh Beckett, was, ironically, Hamilton's sixth tool -- what scouts call his 'makeup.' Said a Devil Rays scout on the day Hamilton was drafted, 'I think character may have been the final determining factor. You read so many bad things about professional athletes, but I don't think you ever will about Josh.'" - Sportswriter Albert Chen in Sports Illustrated (05/27/2008, The Super Natural )

Josh Hamilton Stats by Baseball Almanac |
On May 8, 2012 , Josh Hamilton went 5-for-5 with four home runs and a double for a total of eight RBIs against the Baltimore Orioles. In doing this, he not only became just the 16th player in Major League history to hit four home runs in one game and first since Carlos Delgado in 2003, but also now holds the American League record for most total bases in a game at 18.
Did you know that on August 17, 2008 , Josh Hamilton became only the sixth player in Major League history with an intentional walk with the bases loaded ? Bottom of the ninth, Rangers trailing by five with the bottom third of their batting order due up. Six batters later, Texas had scored one, recorded two outs, but had the bases loaded with Josh Hamilton stepping to the plate. Tampa Bay Rays' manager Joe Maddon told Grant Balfour to intentionally walk Hamilton, not only forcing in a run, but bringing the winning run, Marlon Byrd , to the plate.
Josh Hamilton was destined to be one of those rare "high-character " superstars. But in 2001, working his way from the minors to the majors, all of the plans for Josh went off the rails in a moment of weakness. What followed was a 4-year nightmare of drugs and alcohol, estrangement from friends and family, and his eventual suspension from baseball.
Beyond Belief: Finding the Strength to Come Back
is Hamilton's autobiography that details the events that led up to the derailment. Josh explains how a young man destined for fame and wealth could allow his life to be taken over by drugs and alcohol. But it is also the memoir of a spiritual journey that breaks through pain and heartbreak and leads to the spectacular rebirth of his major-league career. Josh Hamilton makes no excuses and places no blame on anyone other than himself. He takes responsibility for his poor decisions and believes his story can help millions who battle the same demons. "I have been given a platform to tell my story" he says. "I pray every night I am a good messenger."
