"It wasn't until months later, when a Boston sportswriter called to tell him, that (Carroll) Hardy realized he had achieved trivia immortality: He was the only player ever to pinch-hit for Ted Williams . 'I had no idea,' he says." - Sportswriter Jerry Crowe in The Los Angeles Times (08/31/2009, Meet the only man to pinch-hit for Ted Williams )

Carroll William Hardy was a Major League Baseball player with the Cleveland Indians (1958-1960), Boston Red Sox (1960-1962), Houston Colt .45s (1963-1964), and Minnesota Twins (1967). When Hardy took the field on April 15, 1958 , he became the first Sturgis High School graduate to reach the majors!

In a Los Angeles Times interview (Jerry Crowe, 08/31/2009, Meet the only man to pinch-hit for Ted Williams ), Carroll Hardy said being the only pinch hitter for Ted Williams in history, "wasn't a big deal, that's for sure." An excerpt:

The date was Sept. 20, 1960 . Hardy, a baseball journeyman, was nestled into his usual spot on the bench. The reserve outfielder and his Boston Red Sox teammates were in Baltimore , where Ted Williams was playing out the final days of his Hall of Fame career. Williams , arguably the greatest hitter in baseball history, stepped to the plate in the first inning against Orioles starter Hal "Skinny" Brown and promptly fouled a pitch off his instep. "It hurt him so badly," Hardy says of the Splendid Splinter , "that he limped off the field, through the dugout and up into the clubhouse. They said, 'Hardy, get a bat; you're the hitter.' So I grabbed a bat and ran out there and hit into a double play." And that was that.

Did you know that Caroll Hardy, a running back with the 1955 San Francisco 49ers [ NFL Stats ], three years before he played Major League Baseball, caught three touchdown passes from Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Y.A. Tittle ( Bio )?

Carroll Hardy finished his career with seventeen home runs, off sixteen different pitchers, in eight different ballparks. His first homer was on May 18, 1958 , while pinch hitting for Roger Maris . Three years later, Hardy pinch hit for Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski , on May 31, 1961 , the only instance where Yaz was pinch hit for during his Hall of Fame career.
