Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I don't think anything fazes him (Dilson Herrera). It's difficult to get traded. We'll see how guys react this week at the major league level, especially for the first time. Your first instinct is to try to prove how good you are, and that you deserve to be well thought of in the eyes of the new organization. This guy, it hasn't fazed him. Moving up levels, the competition, hasn't fazed him." - New York Mets Director of Player Development Paul DePodesta in the New York Post (John DeMarzo, 08/01/2014, 'Is Dilson Herrera the Mets second baseman of the future?' Source )

Dilson Herrera is the fourteenth Major League player from the country of Colombia and the first ever Colombian-born big leaguer to wear a New York Mets uniform. Herrera said (FOX News Latino, 08/30/2014, 'Youngest Player In MLB, Colombian Dilson Herrera, Gets Call Up From Mets', Source ) after his debut, "It's a real sense of pride to be here representing my country. My family is very proud as well. There's not very many of us."

The Colombians who came before Dilson were: Luis Castro (1902), Orlando Ramirez (1974), Jackie Gutierrez (1983), Edgar Renteria (1996), Orlando Cabrera (1997), Jolbert Cabrera (1998), Yamid Haad (1999), Emiliano Fruto (2006), Ernesto Frieri (2009), Julio Teheran (2011), Jose Quintana (2012), Jhonatan Solano (2012) and Donovan Solano (2012).

One month before Dilson Herrera made his debut, Baseball America (Matt Eddy, 08/05/2014, 'All-Prospect Team: July Edition', Source ), recognized his performance in the minor leagues as one of the best that month and wrote, "Herrera may not have a single knockout tool, but the 20-year-old Colombian does many things well and has made the jump to Double-A in the second half without a misstep. In fact, he hit .320 and ranked third in the minors with 139 hits at the end of July, thanks to a quick swing and plenty of hard contact. He has enough power, speed and control of the zone to profile as a big league starter at the keystone."
