Garry Hill was not the first University of North Carolina player to make it to the major leagues, but he was the first Tarheel ever taken in the amateur draft - a first round pick by the Atlanta Braves in the 1967 Draft !
Garry Hill, three years earlier, was taken during the 1965 Draft , the one-hundred sixty-third pick overall, a ninth round selection by the Washington Senators , out of Garinger High School. Other major leaguers who went to Garinger include John Donaldson , Van Kelly , Dave Lemonds , Mark Davidson , and Brick Smith .
