Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"At one point I was 19-10 with about two weeks to go in the season. We were in a situation where he had a hold on third place but could not reach second place. They said as soon as I won my 20th game I was through for the season. Well, I got beat 2-1, 2-0, 3-1 and 3-2 and was 19-14. My manager Bucky Harris , told me to get my rest on Saturday night before the last game of the season. He told me that if we got the lead on Sunday they could put me in. Ned Garver started against Bob Feller in Cleveland. Garver went four innings and we had a 5-1 lead. Bucky took Garver out and I pitched the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Garver couldn't get the win because he didn't pitch five innings. When I left we were leading 8-2. Paul Foytack came in and pitched the ninth and they gave me the win. You might say it was a cheap way to win a game, but I couldn't have won the last four that I had lost." - Billy Hoeft in Baseball Players of the 1950s: A Biographical Dictionary of All 1,560 Major Leaguers (Rich Marazzi , McFarland Publications, Billy Hoeft , 11/30/2009, Page 158)

William Frederick Hoeft was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Detroit Tigers (1952-1959), Boston Red Sox (1959), Baltimore Orioles (1959-1962), San Francisco Giants (1963, 1966), Milwaukee Braves (1964), and Chicago Cubs (1965-1966). Billy, his nickname, surrendered 173 home runs to 96 batters, in 18 different ballparks, including the first home run in the career of Harmon Killebrew , on June 24, 1955 , who would go on to hit 573 dingers ( 500 Home Runs Club ).

"It is true. I did not really want a signing bonus. I had won more than 30 games in a row in high school, including three no-hitters. I was also playing Legion ball. We won the state. I even had a perfect game there where I struck out every single batter. What I needed was a team with a farm system that won, paid well, and made their own pitchers. George (Moriarty) convinced me to sign with the Tigers, and I did, at my home, for around fifty-thousand." - Billy Hoeft (Letter to Baseball Almanac. The question was, "How did you get to the majors when you were only 19, and is really true that you didn't want a signing bonus?" November 1993)

Billy Hoeft Rookie Card | 1952 Topps Baseball Card (#370 | Checklist ) | Baseball Almanac Collection

Did you know that Billy Hoeft was the only Detroit Tigers left-handed pitcher to win 20-or-more games during the 1950s? His 20-win season in 1956 was also the last by a lefty Tiger until 1971 ! Do you know who won a league leading 25 games that year and struck out a league leading 308 batters? [ Answer ]

Billy Hoeft mowed down 1,140 batters during his career. The two batters he struck out the most in his career were both hall of famers, Mickey Mantle (24 times) and Larry Doby (20 times). However, on September 7, 1953 , in the seventh inning, Hoeft made a little strikeout history when he sent Jim Rivera , Mike Fornieles and Chico Carrasquel back to the dugout after each batter came to plate, saw exactly three pitches, each of the three pitches were strikes, and the first known instances of an Immaculate Inning ( 9 Pitches - 9 Strikes - 3 Outs ) by a Detroit Tigers twirler went into our record book.
