Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"(Art) Houtteman has the weapons for which pitchers sweat years. He has a 'live arm,' his sinker is deceptive, his curve sharp. But he has a tendency to get pitches 'too fat' after he has the batter at his mercy. One of the Yankees said last spring, 'Houtteman is the greatest two-strike pitcher in the majors. But then he starts messin' around, tryin' to be cute, and the first thing you know he's loused up.' - Sportswriter Whitey Lewis in Sport (November 1954)

Arthur Joseph Houtteman was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Detroit Tigers (1945-1953), Cleveland Indians (1953-1957), and Baltimore Orioles (1957). Art, his nickname, was the first Detroit Catholic Central High School graduate to pitch in the majors. Do you know what position player preceded Houtteman? [ Answer ]

On September 21, 1952 , Art Houtteman lost his twentieth game of the season, the fifth Detroit Tiger twirler to lose twenty-or more games in a season, joining Ed Killian (20 losses in 1904), George Mullin (23 losses in 1904, 21 losses in 1905, 20 losses in 1907), Hooks Dauss (21 losses in 1920), and Bobo Newsom (20 losses in 1941). Since Hard Luck Houtteman, no Tiger right-handed pitcher has lost twenty games, but two lefties have. Do you know who they are? ( Answer 1 | Answer 1 )

Baseball historian Warren Corbett wrote, "Pitcher Art Houtteman was known as 'Hard Luck' Houtteman -- and that was before he was nearly killed in a car wreck and before his baby daughter was killed in another wreck." In his exceptional SABR Baseball Biography ( Full Biography ), Corbett shared some additional comments about Art made by fellow ballplayers and managers:

"In 40 years I've never seen a better pitching job by a first year pitcher." - General Manager Billy Evans

"They (Art Houtteman & Bob Lemon ) have more stuff and more pitching sense than any other young fellows I've seen come up in a long while." - Joe DiMaggio

"Arthur has developed a beauty of a slow curve to go with his fast ball and his crossfire pitch." - Red Rolfe

Did you know that Art Houtteman was the youngest player (17) in the American League (AL) when he made his debut, the youngest (18) in the AL his sophomore season, and during his third year, Art won 3 games, one of them before turning 20, one of the few teenage twirlers in Detroit to win a ballgame? The remaining Tiger teen pitchers with at least one win: Josh Billings , John Bogart , Dick Conger , Fred Hutchinson , Denny McLain , Bob Miller , Hal Newhouser , Bruce Robbins , and Charlie Wheatley .
