Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"He (Ryan Howard) did some unbelievable things for our team out of this six hole [in the lineup]. I don't know where we would have been without him. He has no fear about being up in a big spot. He's going to be a special player." - Philadelphia Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel on MLB.com (Ken Mandel, 11/07/2005)

Did you know that Ryan Howard was the first player in National League history to win a Rookie of the Year Award ( 2005 ), immediately followed by a Most Valuable Player Award ( 2006 )? Do you remember which American League player did it first ( 1982 - 1983 )? [ Answer ]

Ryan Howard, during his MVP season ( 2006 ), hit fifty-eight home runs, setting a new ( still-standing ) Philadelphia Phillies single season home run record, held previously by Mike Schmidt (forty-eight home-runs in 1980 )!

Ryan Howard "only" struck out 181 times during the record setting season, one shy of the Phillies single season record set set in 2003 , by Jim Thome . Howard didn't wait long to etch his name into that record, striking out 199 times a year later ( 2007 ), crushing not only the Phils record, but establishing a new ( also still-standing ) National League record, matched twice since, by Howard himself in 2008 , and Adam Dunn in 2010 ! [ Strikeout Records for Hitters ]

During the last decade (2006-2016), only three Major League players have hit more home runs that Ryan Howard (358 HRs); David Ortiz (364 HRs), Miguel Cabrera (368 HRs), and Albert Pujols (390 HRs)! If we focus solely on the National League, Howard is all alone at the top, hitting all 358 home runs in the senior circuit, well ahead of the second and third most prolific sluggers in that era, Ryan Braun (285 HRs) and Adrian Gonzalez (259 HRs).
