Dann Howitt Stats

Dann Howitt was born on Thursday, February 13, 1964, in Battle Creek, Michigan. Howitt was 25 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 15, 1989, with the Oakland Athletics. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Dann Howitt baseball stats page.

"The first pitch came screaming in and missed the plate by a wide margin. Strike one. The second offering, another bullet, was even more off target. Strike two. Unnerved by this sudden generosity at his expense, Dann Howitt of the Mariners glanced back at the umpire in protest. 'Hall of Fame pitcher, son,' was the response. Ten years ago this week, Howitt was face to face with the great Nolan Ryan , scuffling to survive a first-inning at-bat against the Texas Rangers' right-hander before unwittingly becoming the answer to baseball trivia: Who got the last hit off Ryan ?" - Sportswriter Dan Raley in The Seattle Post-Intelligencer (09/22/2003, 'Where Are They Now: Dann Howitt', Source )

Did you know that Dann Howitt hit a grand slam on September 22, 1993 , against future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan and Howitt became, as the quote at the top of the page mentions, the answer to a few baseball trivia questions?

Who got the last hit off Nolan Ryan ?

Who hit the last home run off Nolan Ryan ?

Who hit the last grand slam off Nolan Ryan ?

Dann Howitt vs Nolan Ryan
Dann Howitt vs Nolan Ryan | The Tennessean | July 14, 1994 | Page 1C
Dann Howitt hit five career home runs during his time in the big leagues, this was his last home run, and his only grand slam. The hit, which was the last off Nolan Ryan , was seen by 40,184 fans who showed up at the Kingdome to see the retiring Ryan Express make his final Seattle appearance. However, Nolan injured his arm facing the next batter ( Dave Magadan ), left the game before completing the at-bat, never appeared in another game, making Howitt the last to homer off him, the last to hit a grand slam off him, and the last batter he faced to completion. Howitt has both the bat, a black Louisville Slugger, and the ball, still to this day.

On Michigan Live (Brian VanOchten, 01/13/2010, 'Hastings native Dann Howitt, ex-teammate of Mark McGwire, comes clean about steroid use', Source ) Howitt admitted experimenting briefly with steroids and said in an amazing interview (which we highly recommend you read, link ), "I'm going to be 80 years old and people are going to come up to me and ask, 'So, when did you play?' I'll say I played in the 'Steroid Era.' You hate to be associated with that, but that's what it was." Additionally, in that same article, Howitt said:

"I took them (steroids) for a short time -- a three-week period in the middle of the 1991 season. I started to take them, but then I started feeling guilty and I started to become concerned about harming my body. It manifested in me a lot of anger.

"I had problems with ('roid) rage. If a guy said something to me I didn't like, I wanted to knock the snot out of him. It made my muscles grow at a lot faster rate. I'm 6-foot-5 and I started to look a lot better in my uniform. I just wanted to be one of the 'Bash Brothers' ( Jose Canseco & Mark McGwire ). I felt like I had to keep up. Against my better judgment, I started to take them.

"I stopped because of how steroids affected me. It was Canseco who stepped in and told me, 'No more.' I had all sorts of personality changes. I wasn't sleeping well. My body just couldn't handle them.

"I was being called up and sent down all the time. I started to think, 'I can't get past this,' so I dabbled in them for a while. The other thing (steroids) does is make you feel like King Kong. It gives you a lot of confidence. You're not looking at the longevity of your life. You're just not thinking about that."
