Waite Hoyt Stats

Waite Hoyt was born on Saturday, September 9, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York. Hoyt was 18 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 24, 1918, with the New York Giants. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Waite Hoyt baseball stats page.

"The Yankees mystique had a long history. Pitcher Waite Hoyt, after he was traded to the National League in the 1930s, was enduring a number of barbs from the cocky Chicago Cubs. 'If you guys don't shut up,' he retorted, 'I'll put on my old Yankee uniform and scare you to death.'" - Author William J. Ryczek in The Yankees in the Early 1960s (McFarland Publishing, 09/06/2007, Page 123)

The 1927 New York Yankees are widely considered one of the greatest teams in baseball history. The first six hitters were Earle Combs , Mark Koenig , Babe Ruth , Lou Gehrig , Bob Meusel and Tony Lazzeri , a lineup often referred to as Murderers' Row (bold=Hall of Fame). The pitching staff did not have a legendary nickname, but they did have the lowest ERA in the league (3.20) and one twenty-game winner, Waite Hoyt, who finished the season with 22 wins, tops in the American League ( Top 25 ) along with Ted Lyons .

Waite Hoyt Hall of Fame Plaque
Waite Hoyt | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1969 ( HOF )
In 1928, Waite Hoyt had his second twenty-win season and led the junior circuit in saves. Schoolboy was the first American League pitcher to lead the league in saves the year after he led the league in wins .

When Waite Hoyt pitched in Yankee Stadium on April 19, 1929 , he became the first New York Yankee to wear #12 . Two years later, when he pitched in Sportsman's Park on April 15, 1931 , he became the first Detroit Tiger to wear #14 . Traded mid-season, when he pitched in Shibe Park on July 4, 1931 , he became the first Athletics ( Philadelphia ) player to wear #28 . And, believe it or not, when he pitched in the Polo Grounds on July 2, 1932 , he became the first Giants ( San Francisco ) player to wear #19 . The first to wear four different uniform uniform numbers and did it with four different teams in four different ballparks.
