Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Wild Bill Hutchison was something of an enigma among the players of the 19th Century. Graduating from Yale , and spending one year in post-graduate work there, Hutchison did not play in the Majors until he was 30. After an average 16-17 first year with the Chicago team, he put together three of the greatest years of any pitcher in the history of the game. During 1890-92 he won 122 games. He also led the league all three years in wins, games, games started, games completed and innings pitched." - Old Judge Baseball Card (Back of Old Judge Baseball Card #67, Old Judge Cigarette Factory, Copyright by Goodwin & Co., 1889)

Did you know that Bill Hutchison was the last pitcher in baseball history to win forty-or-more games in back to back seasons? The hard-throwing righty won 44 games in 1891 , and 41 games in 1890 , a pitching feat that will never be matched. Aces that did match Hutchison's feat (40+ wins in consecutive seasons) prior, were Old Hoss Radbourn (48 wins in 1883 & 59 wins in 1884 ), Pud Galvin (46 wins in 1883 & 46 wins in 1884 ), Tommy Bond (40 wins in 1877 , 40 wins in 1878 & 43 wins in 1879 ), and Will White (40 wins in 1882 & 43 wins in 1883 ).

The Chicago Cubs record for wins in a season is held by John Clarkson , one of only four pitchers in franchise history to win 40 or more games in a single season, who won 53 games in 1885 . The other three are Larry Corcoran (43 wins in 1880 ), Al Spalding (47 wins in 1876 ), and Bill Hutchison - the only Cubs pitcher to win 40+ games twice in Chicago .

The Chicago Cubs record for losses in a season is held by Bill Hutchison, who lost 36 games in 1892 . His career total (with Chicago ) was 158 losses, which is also the most in franchise history.

Wild Bill was also a Strikeout Champion in 1892 , joining fellow Cubbie hurlers Larry Corcoran ( 1880 ) and John Clarkson ( 1885 & 1887 ). Hutchison, however, bested both of the previous leaders mowing down 316 batters - a single season total for strikeouts by a Cubs pitcher that has never been surpassed through today.
