Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I'm not going to boast about being the shortstop on a team that has won three of the last four World Championships, but it does feel good. I'm not going to tell you that as a 26-year old multimillionaire who still has all of his hair all of his teeth, and can get dates I have a perfect life, but it's good. I'm not going to tell you that you should want to be like me, because everyone should want to be their own person, but I assure you that it's fun to be me. What I do want to tell you is that I'm proud of where I am and how I got to this stage in my life, and I think there's a way for everyone to benefit from all that I have experienced while making it my dream. I'm proud of the guidance my parents gave me in helping me determined the best ways to methodically move closer and close to my dream, and I'm proud of how I've worked to reach that dream and maintain it. For me, the dream of being a baseball player is a daily challenge - not only living that dream but ensuring it stays alive." - Derek Jeter in The Life You Imagine: Life Lessons for Achieving Your Dreams (Broadway Books, 06/05/2001, Page XIV) [ Derek Jeter Quotes ]

Did you know that Derek Jeter is the New York Yankees all-time career leader in hits (3,465), games played (2,747), stolen bases (358), and at bats (11,195)? The 14-time All-Star shortstop, five Gold Glove Award winning, five Silver Slugger Award winning ballplayer was the twenty-eighth player to join the 3,000 Hits Club and his hit total is the most in Major League history by a shortstop!

When Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada appeared in the same game on July 14, 2011 , it was the 1,660th time they were together in the same box score. Significant because it broke the Bronx Bomber record for most games played in by any two Yankees teammates, held previously by Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri (1,659 games). Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate to one of the greatest shortstops in Major League history:

2 - Derek Jeter was the 17th player in Yankees history to wear #2 (behind Mark Koenig , Yats Wuestling , Lyn Lary , Red Rolfe , Snuffy Stirnweiss , Frankie Crosetti , Jerry Kenney , Matty Alou , Sandy Alomar , Paul Blair , Darryl Jones , Bobby Murcer , Tim Foli , Dale Berra , Wayne Tolleson and Mike Gallego ) - and he will be the last.

6 - Derek Jeter was taken sixth overall in the 1992 Draft . Those taken in front of "The Captain" were 1. Phil Nevin , 2. Paul Shuey , 3. B.J. Wallace, 4. Jeffrey Hammonds and 5. Chad Mottola .

8 - Derek Jeter won Rookie of the Year in 1996, the eighth New York Yankees player to earn that honor: Gil McDougald (1951), Bob Grim (1954), Tony Kubek (1957), Tom Tresh (1962), Stan Bahnsen (1968), Thurman Munson (1970) and Dave Righetti (1981).

5 - Derek Jeter has five World Series rings (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009), five Silver Slugger Awards (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012), five Gold Glove Awards (2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010) and the day he joined the 3,000 Hits Club ( July 9, 2011 ), he went five for five.

13 - Derek Jeter was named the thirteenth Captain of the New York Yankees in 2003. George Steinbrenner said, "I have always been very, very careful about giving such a responsibility (Captain of the New York Yankees) to one of my players, but I can not think of a single player that I have ever had who is more deserving of this honor than Derek Jeter. He is a young man of great character and has shown great leadership qualities. He believes, as I do, what General (Douglas) MacArthur said, that 'there is no substitute for victory.' To him, and to me, it's second only to breathing."

20 - Derek Jeter played twenty seasons in the major leagues and never once was The Captain on a losing team. A feat not duplicated by any other big league player or any player in the National Football League or National Basketball Association.

158 - Derek Jeter has played in a Major League record 158 postseason games. Mr. November ALSO holds postseason records for most plate appearances (734), most at-bats (650), most total bases (302), most hits (200), most singles (143), most strikeouts (135), most runs scored (111), most doubles (32), and most triples (5).

2,674 - Derek Jeter has taken the field at the shortstop position in more than 2,600 games, one of only four shortstops in Major League history with more than 2,500 games played at short; Ozzie Smith had 2,511, Luis Aparicio had 2,581, and Omar Vizquel had 2,709.
