Si Johnson was born on Friday, October 5, 1906, in Danway, Illinois. Johnson was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 11, 1928, with the Cincinnati Reds. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Si Johnson baseball stats page.

" Babe ( Ruth ) was on his way out by then ( May 26, 1935 ). He was practically washed up, the poor guy. Those pitches were all fastballs down the middle. People came to see the Babe hit the ball, but he was late on every swing. Don't tell anybody, but I was hoping the Babe would hit one out. He was a hell of a swell fella." - Si Johnson (Sports Illustrated, Mark Mandernach, 'The Day The Bambino Bombed', June 14, 1993)

Did you know that Si Johnson was the last pitcher to strike out Babe Ruth three times in a game (the twenty-fourth instance in his career)? One day after The Bambino hit three home runs ( box score ), Si Johnson struck him out three times ( box score ), then four days later Ruth retired.

Did you know that Si Johnson was on board an airplane on June 8, 1934 - a significant flight in sports history because the 1934 Cincinnati Reds were also on board making aviation history as the first team to travel by airplane. Si, in The Ottawa Daily Times (Keith Ludolph, 08/18/1979, 'Ex-Major Leaguer Remembers Pitching Career') recalled that not everyone was on board that day, " Ernie Lombardi and Jim Bottomley were afraid to fly and wouldn't get on."

Did you know that Si Johnson was in the bullpen at Crosley Field on May 24, 1935 , the first night game in Major League history which featured President Franklin D. Roosevelt turning on the lights in Cincinnati by flipping at switch at the White House?

Si Johnson pitched two one-hitters ( May 4, 1933 & May 18, 1933 ) in the same month, struck out fourteen batters once ( April 22, 1941 ) setting the Phillies franchise record which wasn't broken until Art Mahaffey struck out seventeen on April 23, 1961 , was selected to start three consecutive Opening Day games ( April 12, 1932 , April 12, 1933 , April 17, 1934 ), but often pitched for struggling clubs and he holds the distinction of having the lowest winning percentage (.380) amongst every pitcher in history with at least 100 wins and 100 losses (the only other pitcher in history who is also lower than .400 is Stump Wiedman , .393, 101 wins, 156 losses).

On September 20, 1928 , after appearing in two games as a relief pitcher, Si Johnson had his first big league at-bat, faced off against future 20-game winner Ben Cantwell , and promptly hit a single. Johnson recalled and quipped, "I got a base hit and I thought, boy, this is fine, but I never hit my weight in my life."
