Thomas Edward John, Jr. was a Major League Baseball player who pitched with the Cleveland Indians (1963-1964), Chicago White Sox (1965-1971), Los Angeles Dodgers (1972-1974, 1976-1978), New York Yankees (1979-1982, 1986-1989), California Angels (1982-1985), and Oakland Athletics (1985). T.J., his nickname, is best known for the revolutionary surgery performed on him first, and named after him. However, did you know T.J. is also the winningest lefty twirler not enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame?

T.J. won 288 games — the seventh most by a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball history? The six Hall of Fame left-handed pitchers with more wins than John are Warren Spahn (363 wins), Steve Carlton (329 wins), Eddie Plank (326 wins), Tom Glavine (305 wins), Randy Johnson (303 wins) and Lefty Grove (300 wins).

T.J. is also 25th on the Top 1,000 All-Time Career Wins chart. Every pitcher above him, also has a plaque in Cooperstown!

Did you know that when Tommy John committed three errors in the fourth inning on July 27, 1988 , he not only tied the American League record for most errors in an inning by a pitcher , but also recorded ALL three errors on one play , on the same batted ball? [Video Below]

Tommy John was a four-time All-Star ( 1968 , 1978 , 1979 , 1980 ), a three-time American League shutout leader ( 1966 , 1966 , 1980 ), he joined the twenty-wins club three times ( 1977 , 1979 , 1980 ) and after he had Tommy John Surgery, he won The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year Award in 1976:

Tommy John Surgery History

Tommy John Surgery is known in the medical profession as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction, a surgical graft procedure in which the ulnar collateral ligament in the medial elbow is replaced with a tendon from elsewhere in the body. The procedure is common among collegiate and professional athletes in several sports, most notably baseball.

Tommy John Surgery was first performed in 1974 by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Frank Jobe, then a Los Angeles Dodgers team physician who served as a special advisor to the team until his death in 2014. It is named after former Major League pitcher Tommy John, the first baseball player to undergo the surgery.

Tommy John Surgery is considered a relatively simple procedure where the patient's arm is opened up around the elbow. Holes to accommodate a new tendon are drilled in the ulna and humerus bones of the elbow. A harvested tendon (often the palmaris tendon)—from the forearm of the same or opposite elbow, from below the knee (known as the patellar tendon), or from a cadaver—is then woven in a figure-eight pattern through the holes and anchored. The ulnar nerve is usually moved to prevent pain as scar tissue that forms can apply pressure to the nerve.

Tommy John Surgery done on Tommy himself had a 1 in 100 chance of recovery, calculated by Dr. Jobe at the time of his revolutionary operation. Prospects of a complete recovery have now risen to 90+ percent. Full rehabilitation takes about one year for pitchers and about six months for position players.

The Hall of Fame Veterans Committee now hold the fate of one of the winningest eligible pitchers — 124 wins before his surgery / 164 wins after his surgery — in Major League history not in the Hall of Fame. Writers never gave him serious consideration: 1995 21.3%, 1996 21.7%, 1997 20.5%, 1998 27.3%, 1999 18.7%, 2000 27.1%, 2001 28.3%, 2002 26.9%, 2003 23.4%, 2004 21.9%, 2005 23.8%, 2006 29.6%, 2007 22.9%, 2008 29.1%, 2009 31.7% - share your thoughts on his enshrinement on Baseball Fever today.
