Deacon Jones Stats

Deacon Jones was born on Wednesday, April 18, 1934, in White Plains, New York. Jones was 28 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 8, 1962, with the Chicago White Sox. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Deacon Jones baseball stats page.

"It could be a good question in a serious trivia contest: 'Who was the first African-American ballplayer honored by the Hall of Fame?' Rather few people would correctly guess Grover Jones. 'My real name is Grover William Jones, Junior,' Deacon Jones explained in a 2008 interview. 'Everybody started calling me Deacon because my father was a deacon in the Baptist Church. My brother Johnny and I, we had to go to church every Sunday, all day, belong to the choir, BYPU, usher boys, you name it.'" - Baseball Historian Bill Nowlin (SABR Baseball Biography Project, "Deacon Jones", Source )

Did you know that The Sporting News (September 19, 1951) had the following excerpt about Deacon Jones - a great natural hitter who still holds the Midwest League record for the highest single-season batting average when he hit .409 for Dubuque in 1956?

It was the first time a player from the losing team was designated American Legion Junior Baseball Player of the Year. The winner of the tournament was honored by having a plaque displayed for the following calendar year at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Grover Jones thereby became the first African American honored with a plaque in Cooperstown.

You can follow the team links in the chart above to locate common statistics (singles), advanced statistics (WHIP Ratio & Isolated Power), and unique statistics (plate appearances & times on bases) not found on any other website.
