Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Baseball players get labels in a hurry, and often those labels last a career. Mike Jorgensen has earned the label as one of the best defensive first baseman in baseball and that's not too bad of a brand to carry. But that title sometimes leads to the assumption that Jorgensen isn't a strong hitter. That's an image the Arlington resident is out to shed." - Irving Daily News (04/04/1979, 'Jorgy job hunting', Page 18)

Did you know that Mike Jorgensen was the first player in Montreal Expos history to win a Gold Glove at any position? The first baseman (picture below) won the Gold Glove Award for First Basemen in 1973, after leading all National League first baggers in fielding percentage (.995) and range factor (10.34). It wasn't an easy time for any team to win at first, besides the Los Angeles Dodgers, as they had Wes Parker win the six years before Jorgensen (1967-1972), then Steve Garvey take it the next four years after Jorgensen (1974-1977)

On May 28, 1979 , Mike Jorgensen was hit in the head by a pitch from Boston Red Sox' Andy Hassler . Dave Roberts entered the game to pinch run for Jorgensen, and Pat Putnam took over as the Rangers' regular first baseman for the next month. Excluding one pinch-hitting appearance on May 31, Mike did not play again until July 1. After suffering headaches, it was discovered he had a small blood clot inside his head, which apparently caused a seizure, and could have resulted in death (see article above).
