Willie Keeler Stats

Willie Keeler was born on Sunday, March 3, 1872, in Brooklyn, New York. Keeler was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 30, 1892, with the New York Giants. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Willie Keeler baseball stats page.

"Keeler was one of the greatest batsmen of all time. He first became noted as a great hitter while playing in the outfield with the famous Baltimore Orioles in the nineties. Several of the records he set while with that organization, thrice a pennant winner of the old National League, remain unbroken. Some of his nineteen years in the majors were spent with the Giants and Brooklyn Nationals and the New York Yankees. He was not a batsman of the slugging type, such as Ed Delahanty and the late Pop Anson , but was a pioneer in the art of place hitting, the philosophy of which he explained in the simple and now famous utterance, 'Hit 'em where they ain't.'" - New York Times Obituary (01/02/1923, 'WILLIE KEELER DIES OF HEART DISEASE, Sports, Pg 1) [ Willie Keeler Quotes ]

Did you know that Willie Keeler hit over .300 sixteen times (in 19 seasons), joined the .400 Hitters Club in 1897, and his .341 career batting average is eleventh all-time?

Wee Willie hit 206 singles during the 1898 season (and 7 doubles, 2 triples and 1 home run), a Major League record that stood until Ichiro Suzuki had 225 singles in 2004 (Keeler's mark is still the National League record for singles in a season ).
