Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I always ran as hard as I could and played as hard as I could throughout my career. Shagging, throwing batting practice, and all that is part of the job and a way to increase my value and improve my chances of staying in the game. I threw batting practice to Yaz after games if coaches weren't available. When I went down to Pawtucket during the 1974 season, I worked with ( Jim ) Rice and ( Fred ) Lynn and threw them extra batting practice. I told (Pawtucket Manager / HOFer) Joe Morgan that I was going to retire at the end of the season and to let the young kids play and I would work with them to help them get better. I think I got a (Minor League) managing job with the Red Sox in 1975 as a result." - John Kennedy in his SABR Baseball Biography (Paul Hirsch, John Kennedy , Full Biography )

John Edward Kennedy was a Major League Baseball player for the Washington Senators (1962-1964), Los Angeles Dodgers (1965-1966), New York Yankees (1967), Seattle Pilots (1969), Milwaukee Brewers (1970), and Boston Red Sox (1970-1974).

Did you know that when John Kennedy made his Major League debut, on September 5, 1962 , pinch-hitting for Senators twirler Ed Hobaugh in the sixth inning, he hit a home run in his first at-bat that also broke up a no-hit effort by Dick Stigman of the Minnesota Twins ?

Did you know that John Kennedy, who was nicknamed The Supersub, was sent into the perfect game being thrown by Sandy Koufax on September 9, 1965 , during the ninth inning, replacing third baseman Jim Gilliam ? Frank Carey, a close friend of John's, said (The Daily Item, 08/12/2018, Source ), "We used to kid him. We'd say to him that Koufax looked out and decided he'd have to strike out all three batters." Koufax did exactly that.
