Terry Kennedy Stats

Terry Kennedy was born on Monday, June 4, 1956, in Euclid, Ohio. Kennedy was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 4, 1978, with the St. Louis Cardinals. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Terry Kennedy baseball stats page.

"As the son of former major league player, manager and [front-office executive Bob Kennedy Stan Musial and Ted Williams ( The Sporting News ). This privileged education undoubtedly contributed to Terry Kennedy's selection as the youngest player on the 1976 College All-America baseball team. He topped that honor a year later by being named collegiate Player of the Year. In a 14-year major league career, he earned a Silver Slugger Award , four All-Star berths and two seasons of Most Valuable Player consideration. A fierce competitor, self-described as 'high-strung,' his leadership skills led two clubs to World Series play and enabled a minor-league managerial career, which extended into the 21st century and included Manager of the Year honors." - Baseball Historian David E. Skelton (SABR Baseball Biography, Terry Kennedy , Source )

Terry Kennedy hit forty-two doubles in 1982 , second most in the National League that season ( Top 25 / Al Oliver had 43). Forty of those doubles were hit while he was catching (the other two while playing first base), making Terry the first catcher in baseball history to hit forty doubles during the same season .

On October 9, 1984 , during Game 1 of the 1984 World Series , Terry Kennedy hit a double in the bottom of the first inning, driving in two runs, Steve Garvey and Graig Nettles . When Mr. Clean crossed the plate, giving Terry his first World Series RBI, father-and-son history was made. Terry's dad, Bob Kennedy , had an RBI during the 1948 World Series , making them the first father and son to each drive in a run during a Fall Classic .

Did you know that when Terry Kennedy finished the 1983 season with a .284 batting average, it was "only" good enough for nineteenth overall ( Top 25 ), but amongst catchers, it was tops in the National League, earning him a Silver Slugger Award - the first one EVER won by a San Diego Padres player, at any position?
