Did you know that when George Kontos made his Major League debut on September 10, 2011 , he took the field wearing #70 , the first time it was ever worn by a New York Yankee ?

On September 20, 2013 , Tim Lincecum started a game versus the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium and was holding onto a 1-1 tie when Kontos took the mound in the seventh inning. Eduardo Nunez had led off the inning with a single to right, then stole second as Lyle Overbay was struck out. The Giants ' bullpen was already busy due to the pitch count, but Brendan Ryan only needed to get hit by one to put a man on first and second. J.R. Murphy advanced the runners to second and third on a routine groundout, setting the stage for Ichiro Suzuki . Lincecum walked him, for his second walk of the game (also the second of the inning), loading the bases:

George Kontos, now pitching for the Giants after being traded by the Yankees on April 4, 2012, entered in relief, one out, bases loaded, with the designated hitter at-bat. Alex Rodriguez patiently worked the count in his favor, then crushed a 2-1 fastball over the wall in right field for a no-doubter.

After the game Rodriguez said, "I'm a huge fan of Lou Gehrig , everything he's done. He's become like the gold standard for a Yankee . It's a special moment. I'll think about it someday."

The it he was referring to, was moving into first place on the all-time grand slam list in baseball history, one ahead of The Iron Horse . [ Top 1,000 ]

Why does the glove worn by George Kontos have "Spartan" written on it? Condé Nast asked him that (Epicurious, Kelly Senyei, 'MLB Diet Diary: George Kontos of the San Francisco Giants', Link ), and several more great questions, and Kontos replied, "My dad was born in Sparta, Greece, and actually both sides of my mom and dad's families are from Sparta. In 2007, when the movie 300 came out, I was in the middle of conditioning drills with the Yankees, and one of my teammates was giving me a hard time because I was tired. He said, 'The Spartans wouldn't be tired!' And when I heard that, I took off running and finished the entire drill. From then on out, the nickname 'Spartan' just stuck. I now have it embroidered on every single one of my gloves."
