Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I remember two things (about playing in the 1962 All-Star Game ). When I was growing up I admired Stan Musial . In those days both teams stayed at the same hotel. Well I come out of the hotel getting on the bus to go to the park and who's looking right at me? Stan Musial . I got to sit next to him on the bus and we talked. The other thing I remember is that I got into the game and came up to hit and the pitcher for the National League is Bob Shaw . I got a real funny feeling because I didn't want to hit against him. He was my friend and my teammate for a number of years." - Jim Landis ( Jim Landis Interview , Baseball Almanac, Mark Liptak)

Jim, his nickname, served in the U.S. Army (1954-1955) during the Korean Conflict, and was stationed in Alaska before beginning his Major League career!

Jim Landis, who is one of the best defensive center fielders in Major League history, won five consecutive (1960-1964) Gold Glove Awards , breaking the American League record of three straight (1957-1959) held previously by Hall of Famer Al Kaline . Do you know who eventually won six in a row? [ Gold Glove American League Outfielders ]

Did you know Jim Landis was one-of-only three outfielders that the Chicago White Sox named to their Team of the Century , on September 30, 2000, when the franchise was commemorating 100 years of White Sox baseball? Those who were chosen to roam the outfield alongside Landis were Joe Jackson and Minnie Minoso !

When Jim Landis led the American League in double plays by a center fielder in 1961, it was the third time (1957, 1960) he stood atop the leaderboard in that fielding statistic. The only Pale Hose player — through today — to lead the junior circuit three seasons! Trivia time: One White Sox center fielder led the league twice during his career, who was it? [ Answer ]
