Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I guess you could say that I'm the redemption of the fat man. A guy will be watching me on TV and see that I don't look in any better shape than he is. 'Hey, Maude,' he'll holler. 'Get a load of this guy. And he's a 20-game winner.'" - Mickey Lolich in Baseball Digest (Wayne Stewart, Colorful Quotes Have Always Been Part of Game's History , June 1992)

Michael Stephen Lolich was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Detroit Tigers (1963-1975), New York Mets (1976), and San Diego Padres (1978-1979). Mickey, his nickname, had 2,832 career strikeouts when he retired— the most by a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball history until he was surpassed by hall of famer Steve Carlton in 1981 !

Mickey Lolich lost the major league record for career strikeouts by a lefty (above) in 1981, but his 2,679 career strikeouts in the American League were still the most in the Junior Circuit until 2017! Trivia: Who passed him? [ Answer ]

Did you know that Mickey Lolich holds — through today — the Detroit Tigers record for most games started (459) by any pitcher in their history, the most career shutouts (39), and the most strikeouts (2,679)? Mickey also still holds the single season Tiger record for most games started, 45 in 1971 , and his strikeout total that year was 308, making Lolich the first and only Motown pitcher with 300-or-more strikeouts in any season!

Mickey Lolich had 205 plate appearances in the minors, he never hit a home run. 1,222 plate appearances in the majors, he never hit a home run in a regular season game. During his first World Series at-bat, in Game 2 of the 1968 World Series , Mickey homered, the only home run of his Major League career, and according to Lolich, it was the first one he hit since Little League! Lolich might have been one of the most dominant lefty pitchers, but he batted right handed as seen in the video below, and was not wearing a batting helmet during the historic Fall Classic moment!
