Herman Long Stats

Herman Long was born on Friday, April 13, 1866, in Chicago, Illinois. Long was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 17, 1889, with the Kansas City Blues. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Herman Long baseball stats page.

"But it was in the covering of his position at short stop that Herman Long made his greatest, gained his greatest vogue. He was as active as a flea, and all over the infield and part of the outfield at once and the same time. He covered more ground than an automobile out for an endurance test, and he had a way of dragging things out of the air that would have done credit to a profesional magician." - Sportswriter W. W. Aulick in The Arizona Republican (10/10/1911, 'Ball Fans Gallery of Notables', Page 8)

In 1883 Francis Richter founded the Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887 Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914 Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914). In that historic book Richter selected the greatest players in each position in each decade:
