Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"In a game in Anaheim Mahay hit a key homer, and Mike (Greenwell) was the first guy out of the dugout to shake his hand. The Angels weren't too happy that a replacement player had gone yard against them, and the next time Mahay came up, someone on the team yelled for the pitcher to hit him. Sure enough, Ron was drilled, and first guy out of the dugout was Greenwell . So things slowly returned to normal. But there were a few players who harbored resentment against the replacement players for some time to come." - Kevin Kennedy in Twice Around the Bases: The Thinking Fan's Inside Look at Baseball (It Books Publishing, 07/03/2006, Page 109)

Did you know that Ron Mahay was drafted as an outfielder in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball Draft in 1991 replacement players called up by the Red Sox. As a consequence, Mahay (and all other 1995 replacement players who later made the big leagues) is not eligible for membership in the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Did you know that when Ron Mahay took the field on May 26, 1995 , in the last game he played as an outfielder, he hit his first (and only) Major League home run, a sixth inning blast off Mike Butcher ?

Ron Mahay played in 519 Major League ballgames, but only five games in his first season and all five were as an outfielder. Why? During the 1995-1996 off-season, while playing for Red Sox coach Buddy Bailey, Mahay was fooling around on the mound. Bailey noticed a live fastball and great form and convinced the Red Sox that Mahay's worth would be more as a left-handed pitcher. So, Mahay returned to the Sarasota Red Sox (A+) / Trenton Thunder (AA) as a hurler in 1996. After some success in the minors, he was summoned to Boston and became the first big leaguer since Skip Lockwood to play the field for one big-league season and return later as a pitcher.

On September 11, 2004 , Ron Mahay and Carlos Almanzar made Major League history when they each gave up a home run to a pinch hitter during the eighth inning. Only seven times in American League history had two pinch hit home runs been allowed during the same inning and this instance was the first for the Toronto Blue Jays. Eric Hinske pinch hit for Frank Menechino in the 8th inning, bases were empty, two outs, when he hit went deep off Almanzar who then gave up a double to the next pinch hitter. Mahay was called in from the bullpen to replace Almanzar , Chris Gomez pinch hit for Dave Berg , then he went deep making baseball history.
