"That was a swing that touched a lot of people. Starling has been a special player all the way up. He's been a lot of places and a lot of people have had the opportunity to watch him. We've got an entire minor league system and an academy in the Dominican Republic pulling for him. So (it was) really cool, really cool." - Pittsburgh Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle (AP Wire, 07/26/2012, Starling Marte homers on 1st major league pitch as Pirates upend Astros , Source )

Did you know that Starling Marte joined both the Home Run in First At-Bat "club" and Home Run With First Pitch "club" when he made his Major League debut on July 26, 2012 (courtesy of Dallas Keuchel )? Too easy? Only Marte and Kaz Matsui ( April 6, 2004 ) were at their first at-bat, homered with the first pitch, AND , it was actually the first pitch of the entire game! An anecdote:

"The closer I got (to his first game), the more I thought about it," Marte said through interpreter Luis Silverio. "I thank God for this opportunity with the Pirates. I hope it's going to be a long career — 15 or 20 years."

Marte's mother died when he was 10, so he was raised by his grandmother. She was the first one he called to share the happy news.

"She was pretty proud. She was crying," he said. "Then I started calling friends, girlfriends and everybody else."

Girlfriends? As in, more than one?

"Well ... he's an honest kid," Silverio said with a laugh.

Starling Marte is the first graduate of the Pittsburgh Pirates Latin American training facility ( Park Details ) to reach the major leagues. The Academy appeared to help Marte on his journey to the big leagues as Baseball America ( Source ) ranked Marte as the Pittsburgh Pirates #6 prospect after the 2009 season (and Best Outfield Arm), #4 after the 2010 season (and Best Outfield Arm as well as Best Athlete), and #4 again after the 2011 season (Best Outfield Arm a third time, Best Athlete a second time, and Best Hitter for Average).

In 2015, Starling Marte (left field) was selected as the Wilson Defensive Player of The Year , given to only one player at every position who is the best defensive player in Major League Baseball.
