Edgar Martinez Stats

Edgar Martinez was born on Wednesday, January 2, 1963, in New York, New York. Martinez was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 12, 1987, with the Seattle Mariners. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Edgar Martinez baseball stats page.

"Seattle Mariner Edgar Martinez remains baseball's most anonymous star and dares not leave home without his credit card. He is the Billy Williams of his day, a little recognized performer, lost on a team that hasn't had a lot of success, toiling in relative obscurity, putting up big numbers nonetheless." - By Jim Bianchine in Baseball Digest (December 1995, 'Mariners' Edgar Martinez: An Unsung Batting Champion', Page 38)

Edgar Martinez has languished on the Hall of Fame ballot, far from the 75% threshold needed for induction - 2010 (36.2%), 2011 (32.9%), 2012 (36.5%), 2013 (35.9%), 2014 (25.2%), 2015 (27.0%) - but teammate, and 2015 Hall of Famer Randy Johnson , had the following to say about El Papa:

Randy Johnson: Vote Edgar Martinez

"I've faced a lot of Hall of Fame hitters, and my gosh, Edgar is the best hitter that I ever saw. I support him because he was my teammate, and I loved him, and he did so much for Seattle and made me look good during my career there. The first person on my ballot who would get my vote is Edgar. Yes, I'm campaigning for him. But isn't that always going to happen with these kinds of things? He was just a great hitter. You know how you love something and you carry it around with you? When I got to Seattle, Edgar was walking around with a bat all the time. The guy's locker was right across the carpet from mine, and I'd look at the top of his locker and he would have his bats lined up and his own scale to weigh the bats. Who does that? I learned all kinds of little tidbits and secrets from him. I know you don't get into the Hall of Fame by being a nice guy. You get in for merit -- and Edgar's merit stands by itself with all he's done. But he's also one of the nicest and most humble guys I've ever met."

When Edgar Martinez hung up his playing cleats in 2004, he had accumulated five Silver Slugger Awards , one at third base (1992) and four as a DH (1995, 1997, 2001, 2003), leaving Gar tied with Hall of Famer Paul Molitor (1987, 1988, 1993, 1996) for most in history by a designated hitter, since passed by David Ortiz (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2013).

Did you know that Edgar Martinez, who began his career as a third baseman, won an American League batting title in 1992 , hitting an American League leading .343, and became the first Seattle Mariners ' batting champion ? Did you know that when Papi won his second batting title in 1995 , leading the league with a .356 batting average, he was a designated hitter, the first DH in baseball history to ever win a batting title ?
