Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"PITCHER * 30: The California Angels right-hander balks at being designated a beauty ('Honestly, I just don't see this'). But his wife, Dana, is sure she made a great catch. 'Kirk is very Mel Gibsonish,' she says. 'The first time I saw him, he was 18 years old and playing on the same team with my brother. I got a crush. I thought he looked cute in a baseball cap.' She adds, 'He thinks he has kind of a big nose. But he doesn't. It fits his face.' McCaskill impressed his teammates by battling through last season with a bone spur on his elbow. 'He proved to a lot of people that he was driven to win,' says fellow Angels pitcher Mark Langston . Team photographer V.J. Lovero adds, 'No matter how hard he is working, he never has a drop of sweat on his face.' So cool control comes naturally? Not quite. Squeals Langston: "He does use mousse." - People Magazine (July 18, 1991, "100 Most Beautiful People", Page 100)

Kirk McCaskill, the 164th Major League player who was born in Canada (the 79th Canadian -born pitcher), was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003, alongside Joe Carter . McCaskill said, "I am stunned by this wonderful news. I can't wait to tell my family and my parents. I am very proud of my Canadian heritage, and this is going to be an honor of a lifetime." The Hall of Fame wrote:

Though his father was a professional hockey player, Kirk McCaskill opted for a career in baseball after starring in both sports at the University of Vermont

Drafted by the California Angels in 1982 Draft , McCaskill made his major league debut against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 1, 1985 . With 12 wins and six complete games in his first season, McCaskill proved to be a bona fide big league pitcher. He would follow that up with his best season in 1986 , recording 17 wins, 202 strikeouts and 3.36 ERA. More importantly, he helped lead the Angels to a berth in the American League Championship Series, where he would start two games.

Hampered by elbow troubles for two seasons, McCaskill returned with a vengeance in 1989 , even taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 28 . He would finish the season with 15 wins, four shutouts and a sparkling 2.93 ERA. He toed the rubber for two more seasons with the Angels , before signing with the Chicago White Sox , where he was converted into a reliever in 1993. When McCaskill called it a career in 1996, he had accumulated 106 wins (second-most by a Canadian ), tossed 30 complete games and hurled 11 shutouts over 12 big league seasons .

On September 14, 1990 , Kirk McCaskill gave-up a first inning home run to Ken Griffey . The very next batter, Ken Griffey, Jr. , hit a home run as well, making Kirk McCaskill the only pitcher in baseball history to ever surrender back-to-back homers to a father and son during a Major League game.
