Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The only thing I asked was that the playing field be even. Judge me on who I am and what I have to say. I never doubted that if all those things were even, I'd come out on top." - Lloyd McClendon in Sports Illustrated (Stephen Cannella, 11/30/2000, 'Little League Legend Grows Up The Pirates' Lloyd McClendon is the youngest in a new generation of managers', Source )

Did you know that Lloyd McClendon played catcher in the 1971 Little League World Series with his hometown Gary, Indiana team - one that made it to the finale, but lost again Taiwan in Williamsport (with McClendon on-deck)? Legendary Lloyd, who actually earned that childhood nickname during the Little League World Series, actually hit five home runs on five swings in one of the earlier qualifying rounds!

Lloyd McClendon played his final Major League game in 1994 and eventually took over as Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2001 through 2005. In 2013 he was named the 19th Manager of the Seattle Mariners and time will tell if he earns another SportsCenter Top 10 like he did in the video below, (ESPN, 'Top 10 Sports Meltdowns', #6 Lloyd McClendon):

Top 10 Sports Meltdowns | ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 | Video by ESPN

The League Championship Series (LCS) record for highest batting average is .727 - a mark set by Lloyd McClendon during the 1992 NLCS.
