Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I'll always remember it. The Giants came to Wrigley Field in first place and were leading the Cubs by four games at the time. We swept the first three games and the fans were going wild ( Game 1 , Game 2 , Game 3 , Game 4 ). A win in the final contest would put us in a tie for first place. We had another capacity crowd, and the score was tied in the top of the tenth inning. I came in to relieve Barney Schultz , with the bases loaded and one out. The first thing I did, with the help of the catcher and shortstop, was to pick Willie Mays off second base, and then I struck out Ed Bailey to get us out of the jam. I received a standing ovation when I walked to the dugout. I was the first batter up in the bottom of the tenth and hit a home run to win the game. As I rounded the bases, I was received by the entire ballclub at home plate and was given a very prolonged standing ovation from the fans. You know about those Cub fans!" - Lindy McDaniel in Baseball Digest (June 1993, "The Game I'll Never Forget", Page 37)

Lindy McDaniel, on May 10, 1959, was part of a unique baseball oddity which has only occurred seven times in Major League history. He relieved out of the Cardinals bullpen in both ends of a doubleheader and lost Game 1 , but won Game 2 - not that odd. However, Elmer Singleton relieved in both ends of that same doubleheader for the Cubs and won Game 1 , but lost Game 2 . Two relievers, two games, same day, both received both the decisions and both split the wins and losses evenly.

Did you know that Lindy McDaniel stepped to the plate, top of the ninth inning, dug in versus Mickey Lolich , and hit a bases empty (go-ahead) home run in Tiger Stadium on September 28, 1972 ? Did you know that home run was the last one ever hit by a New York Yankees pitcher? Topps mentioned it on a card (above).

Did you know that Lindy McDaniel saved twenty-two games in 1963, for the Chicago Cubs , and set a new team record for saves in a season once set by Mordecai Brown in 1911, then tied by Turk Lown in 1956, and tied a third time by Don Elston in 1959?

Did you know that Lindy McDaniel, seven years after he set the Cubs saves record (in 1970), saved twenty-nine games for the New York Yankees , tying the team record set by Luis Arroyo in 1961?

Did you know that Lindy McDaniel finished his big league career with 987 games pitched ( Top 1,000 ) which, at the time of his retirement, was the second most in Major League history, behind Hoyt Wilhelm (who had 1,070 games pitched)?

In 1963, Lindy McDaniel won his second Fireman of the Year Award , the first closer in National League history to win The Sporting News' prestigious reliever of the year honor more than once.
