Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"One thing (Joe) McGinnity could have in today's game was his specialty pitch. He perfected an underhand pitch that has a similar movement to the riseball in fastpitch softball. According to newspaper accounts, his fingers would almost touch the ground, and with the twist of his wrist, he'd manage to get something resembling an up-curve that most batters swung under. That pitch kept him in the game until his mid-50s. He nicknamed the pitch 'Old Sal.' He reportedly threw it nearly every pitch. Catchers caught him without using signs. He wasn't fast; didn't need to be. Old Sal became part of the legend of Iron Man Joseph." - Columnist Marc Nesseler (AP Wire, 05/08/2006)

In Major League pitching history, you will be hard challenged to find a better start to a career than Joe McGinnity: First season (28 wins), second season (28 wins), third season (26 wins), fourth season (21 wins), fifth season (31 wins), sixth season (35 wins), seventh season (21 wins), eighth season (27 wins) - during that streak, Iron Joe led the National League in wins five times ( 1899 , 1900 , 1903 , 1904 , 1906 ), innings pitched four times ( 1900 , 1901 , 1903 , 1904 ) complete games two times ( 1901 , 1903 ), winning percentage two times ( 1900 , 1904 ), and one ERA title ( 1904 ). Iron Man was elected into the Hall of Fame by the Old Timers Committee in 1946, because the Baseball Writers Association of America were not as impressed with his big league career: 1937 BBWAA - 6.0%, 1938 BBWAA - 13.7%, 1939 BBWAA - 11.7%, 1942 BBWAA - 25.3%, 1945 BBWAA -17.8%.

Did you know that Joe McGinnity holds a pitching record that will never be beaten ? Scheduled doubleheaders are now uncommon. Pitchers who throw complete games are now not as common as they once were. Joe McGinnity pitched two complete games - on the same exact day (both ends of a doubleheader) - and won both of them, not once during his career (August 1, 1903), not twice during his career (August 8, 1903), but a Major League record three times during his career (August 31, 1903) - all three during the same season (1903), and all three during the same month (August).
