Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Dave (McNally) was an unbelievable competitor. He did it with cunning and intelligence. He loved to set you up with a change, fool you with that tremendous curve and then throw the fastball by you. Plus, he was 100% gentleman. He was the kind of guy you wanted your son to be." - Hall of Famer Earl Weaver in Montana Baseball History (Skylar Browning, The History Press, Dave McNally , Page 94)

Did you know that Dave McNally was the first BALTIMORE ORIOLES pitcher to win 20-or-more games in more than one season? McNally won 22 games in 1968 ( Top 25 ), 20 games in 1969 ( Top 25 ), 24 games in 1970 ( Top 25 ), and 21 games in 1971 ( Top 25 ) - four twenty-win seasons in four straight seasons!

Did you know that Mickey Mantle once said, "McNally, who has just about the best curve ball in the league , will throw that curve any time, no matter what the situation."

Dave McNally had his 1974 contract automatically renewed by the Orioles, who used the reserve clause rule. On October 7, 1975 the Major League Baseball Players Association filed a grievance on his behalf, as well as Andy Messersmith . On December 23, 1975, arbitrator Peter Seitz ruled in favor of McNally, nullified the reserve clause, and players now become free agents after playing a year with their team without a contract.
