" GEORGE MOGRIDGE : Fifteen years ago this season, out in Des Moines, Iowa, a tall, left-handed pitcher was setting back his opponents with such regularity that scouts from several major league clubs were attracted to his work. The twirler, George Mogridge, led the Western League in earned runs effectiveness that year, while winnings 24 games and losing 11 combats. Mogridge had a trial with the Chicago White Sox a few years before this time, but the New York Americans decided to give him a looking over and he was bought for $5500. George joined the big outfit a few days later and he worked in six games before the close of the season, securing two wins and being beaten four times. This lefthander has been hurling in the fast set ever since. Five seasons he worked in the box for the Yankees and four years he has been pitching for the Washington Senators. He appeared in his first world's series last fall and captured one of the Senators' victories." - The Wilkes-Barre Times Leader (02/18/1925, Baseball Ball Birthday Sketches , Page Twenty)

George Mogridge had four losing seasons on his resume, finished the 1917 season with a disappointing 9-11 record, but he also possessed a wicked curve ball. On April 24, 1917 , Mogridge used it - and more - to baffle the 1916 World Series champion Boston Red Sox , defeating them 2-1 at Fenway Park , and recording the first official no-hitter for the New York Yankees !
