Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"In a move that is unheard of today, (Mike) Morgan made his Major League debut a few days after he was drafted against Baltimore as a teenager without any minor league experience [ Straight to the Big Leagues ]. Not even Stephen Strasburg went directly from San Diego State to the Washington Nationals . 'I gradated from high school and went on a senior trip. I got drafted and Charlie Finley ( A's owner) had me on an airplane to Oakland . Four or five days later I was starting against Baltimore ,' Morgan said. 'I got a standing ovation, and had my dad, my mom and my sister sitting behind the dugout. It was an amazing experience.'" - Daily Herald Writer Neil K. Warner (08/05/2010, Former MLB pitcher Morgan's baseball knowledge rubbing off at Pleasant Grove , Source )

Mike Morgan stepped onto the mound in 1979, and walked off the mound in 2002, the twenty-third Major League player in baseball history to appear in a regular season game in four different decades , the ninth pitcher, joining Kid Gleason (1888-1912), Nick Altrock (1898-1933), Jack Quinn (1909-1933), Bobo Newsom (1929-1953), Early Wynn (1939-1963), Jim Kaat (1959-1983), Jerry Reuss (1969-1990) and Nolan Ryan (1966-1993).

Did you know that Mike Morgan played for twelve different teams over those twenty-five years (prompting friends to nickname him The Nomad), tying the Major League record for most Major League teams played for (12), set previously by Deacon McGuire ? Do you know who broke their record in 2012? [ Answer ]

In 1985, Matt Young lost nineteen games, the first Seattle Mariners pitcher to lead all other American League (AL) twirlers in games lost . A year later, Mike Morgan lost seventeen games, the first Mariners right-handed pitcher to lead all other AL twirlers in games lost . [ Year by Year Leaders for Games Lost ]
