Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Don Mossi was the complete, five-tool ugly player. He could run ugly, hit ugly, throw ugly, field ugly, and ugly for power. He was ugly to all fields. He could ugly behind the runner as well as anybody, and you talk about pressure... man, you never saw a player who was uglier in the clutch." - Baseball Historian Bill James in The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract (Free Press Publishing, 06/13/2003, Page 245)

Did you know that Don Mossi's career fielding percentage of .990 was the highest ever recorded by a pitcher when he retired? Too easy? Did you know when The Sphinx retired he was also only the eighth Major League pitcher in history with at least 100 career wins and 50 saves - the others, in order, were: Jack Quinn (247 & 57), Firpo Marberry (148 & 101), Waite Hoyt (237 & 52), Lefty Grove (300 & 55), Johnny Sain (139 & 51), Ellis Kinder (102 & 102), & Gerry Staley (134 & 61)?

Don Mossi appeared in 40 games, had a 6-1 record, 7 saves, and a 1.94 ERA on the 1954 Cleveland Indians - arguably one of the best pitching staffs in Major League history. Mossi and Ray Narleski appeared in more than half of the Indians games that 111 wins season and when author Russell Schneider interviewed "Ears" ( Whatever Happened to Super Joe?: Catching Up With 45 Good Old Guys from the Bad Old Days of the Cleveland Indians , Gray & Company Publishing, 10/31/2006, 'Don Mossi', Page 148) for his book some great quotes were included:

"The way Al ( Lopez ) used us depended on who was coming to the plate. If it was a left-hander, he brought me in. If it was a right-hander, he got Narleski .

"Almost everything in the game is different now. The players are much bigger and so much stronger. Look at their necks, their arms. Is it because of steroids? I don't know. When we finished a season, we went home and got a job.

"And the money guys are making. I guess it's the American way to get all you can. If it were me, money wouldn't be the only factor, not even the major factor. I'd be going for the conditions, where I would feel the best, the happiest. Hell, I'd cut the dollars in half just to be happy.

The Indians selected the 100 Greatest Indians, Don Mossi made it: "Went 6-1 with seven saves and a 1.94 ERA as a rookie reliever in 1954. Had 27 saves in first three seasons, then became a starter in 1957, when he made the All-Star team and went 11-10. First five years of 12-year career were with Indians ."
