Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I tried not to let my team down because I had a lot of people depending on me, and it was great to come through many times. I never thought about breaking records or anything like that. The main thing for me was trying to help my team win the game. That was more important than any record." - Manny Mota (Baseball Digest, May 2006, Al Doyle, 'Manny Mota: The Game I'll Never Forget', Page 70)

Did you know that Manny Mota singled off the Astros' Joe Sambito for his 146th pinch hit on September 29, 1979 , breaking the Major League record for Pinch Hits in a Career set by Smoky Burgess ? Mota, the eleventh player in history from the Dominican Republic , held the record for twenty-years year until it was broken Lenny Harris , on October 6, 2001 .

Manny Mota, along with Rick Monday , were once called "so old, that they were the waiters at the Last Supper," by none other than their Hall of Fame skipper Tommy Lasorda . Some notable dates during his twenty year playing career / followed by a thirty-four year coaching career (the longest in team history and the second-longest such streak in Major League history behind Nick Altrock , who spent 42 straight seasons listed as a coach for the Washington Senators) include:

June 2, 1962 : Mota pinch hit for Jim Davenport , singling off Bob Moorhead to left field, the first pinch hit of his career.

May 26, 1964 : Mota hit his first career home run, Chris Short of the Philadelphia Phillies served up the tater.

October 14, 1968: Mota was the second player selected in the expansion draft by the Montreal Expos .

May 16, 1970 : Mota hit a foul ball that resulted in a fatality; in the bottom of the third against the Giants at Dodger Stadium, Mota fouled one off of Gaylord Perry along the first base line. The ball struck 14-year-old Alan Fish in the left temple. Four days later, Fish died of an inoperable head injury.

September 2, 1979 : Manny Mota tied the Major League record for pinch hits in a career, singling off Lynn McGlothen of the Chicago Cubs .

September 29, 1979 : Manny Mota set the Major League record for pinch hits in a career , singling off Joe Sambito of the Houston Astros.

October 9, 1979: Manny Mota met Jimmy Carter at the White House so the President of the United States could congratulate him on setting the career mark for pinch hits .

October 5, 1980 : Mota pinch hit for Fernando Valenzuela , singling off Joe Sambito to right field, the final pinch hit of his career.

In 1991, less than ten years after his playing career, two of Manny Mota's sons (pictured above) made it to the Major Leagues: Jose Mota , on May 25, 1991 , and Andy Mota , on August 31, 1991 - A memorable year for certain. Another "good year" was 2003, when Manny was inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame on August 23rd.
